Match-fixing scandal shakes Greek basketball
Greek basketball is currently embroiled in a significant corruption scandal following the arrest of Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) President Vangelis Liolios, alongside referees, members of the Central Refereeing Committee (KED), and a close associate. The investigation, which has triggered widespread outrage, involves allegations of bribery, match-fixing, and illicit betting activities spanning from 2018 to 2026. Authorities have reportedly uncovered substantial evidence, including 820,000 euros found in the possession of an accused individual, while two protected witnesses, including an active referee and a lower-division club president, have provided testimony regarding a systematic effort to manipulate game outcomes.
Dimitris Giannakopoulos, the owner of Panathinaikos, has publicly demanded accountability, claiming his club was a target of this corrupt system for years. Conversely, Olympiacos has denied any connection to the scandal, distancing itself from the accusations while pledging to continue its own efforts for fair officiating. Meanwhile, AEK has also issued a statement recalling its previous formal complaints regarding unfair treatment. As the judicial investigation continues, the Hellenic Basketball Federation faces a leadership crisis, with internal discussions mounting over the resignation of current officials as the sport grapples with the fallout of these serious criminal allegations.
