Explosion targeting police in Kolonos, Athens
On Wednesday afternoon, October 21, 2026, an explosion occurred at the entrance of an apartment building on Platonos Street in the Kolonos district of Athens. The incident was triggered after police responded to an anonymous tip regarding a suitcase allegedly containing narcotics. Upon arrival and inspection of the suitcase, an explosive device detonated.
The blast resulted in injuries to four people. Two police officers were wounded, with one sustaining a serious head injury that required transport to the 401 Military Hospital. Two civilians who were passing by the scene were also injured and taken to Evangelismos Hospital. Eighteen firefighters and six vehicles were deployed to secure the area and ensure no further threats existed.
Greek authorities are currently investigating the incident as a potential targeted attack or a 'death trap' set for law enforcement. Investigators are working to track the caller who made the initial report to determine their identity and potential involvement in the setup. While the initial report mentioned a suspicious suitcase, police are also examining witness reports, including one source stating that the person who called had provided their identification and may not have been aware of the trap. The area remains cordoned off as police continue their forensic analysis.
