Developments in Cyprus negotiations and opening of crossing points
Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou stated on October 21, 2026, that significant progress has been made regarding the Cyprus issue despite ongoing obstacles. A key meeting is scheduled for October 30 between President Nikos Christodoulides and the UN Secretary-General's envoy to discuss the path forward.
Regarding the opening of new crossing points, Menelaou noted that technical issues concerning the Pyroi crossing have been resolved. However, discussions remain stalled over the Turkish side's demand to include the Louroujina-Lympia crossing, while no agreement has been reached on the Greek Cypriot proposal for a crossing at Kokkina. President Christodoulides has submitted two new proposals to Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, who has already rejected one and is currently reviewing the second following requested clarifications. An answer from Erhurman is expected at their next meeting.
These efforts represent ongoing attempts to improve connectivity and facilitate progress in broader reunification talks. Both sides continue to deliberate on the specific locations and conditions for new transit points, which remain a point of contention in the negotiation process.
