Limassol considers tram network to tackle traffic congestion
Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis has announced that a preliminary study regarding the potential implementation of a tram network in the city is currently underway. The project, which aims to reduce the city's heavy reliance on private vehicles—estimated at 90% of all journeys—has already seen its initial findings presented to the Minister of Transport. Officials are exploring various technical solutions, including the use of existing bus lanes for tram tracks, to help mitigate the severe traffic congestion that frequently affects the city.
Financial estimates for the project vary significantly based on the chosen technology, with construction costs projected between €25 million and €95 million per kilometre. Mayor Armeftis emphasized that these costs must be weighed against broader socio-economic benefits, such as increased real estate value, improved quality of life, and the reduction of economic losses caused by traffic delays. While the municipality is actively seeking alternatives to the current system, where buses currently account for only 3% to 5% of travel, no final decision on the project's construction has been reached. Future developments will depend on further evaluation of the infrastructure's viability and integration with the existing urban landscape.
