Limassol municipality explores potential tram network to combat traffic
The Limassol municipality is conducting a preliminary study to evaluate the feasibility of a tram network as a solution to the city's severe traffic congestion. Mayor Yiannis Armeftis announced that initial findings have already been presented to the Minister of Transport, highlighting the potential for utilizing existing bus lanes for the system.
The project faces significant financial requirements, with estimated construction costs ranging from 25 to 95 million euros per kilometer, depending on the chosen technology. Mayor Armeftis noted that Limassol currently experiences a 90% reliance on private vehicles, while public bus transport accounts for only 3% to 5% of all commutes, despite the state spending approximately 100 million euros annually on public passenger transport, with 25 million euros allocated specifically to Limassol.
This initiative stems from the city's struggle with high traffic volumes caused by the heavy dependence on private cars. The mayor emphasized that, rather than waiting for state intervention, the municipality has proactively taken charge of investigating sustainable transport solutions to improve urban mobility and effectively manage the city's traffic issues.
