Hungary marks 70th anniversary of 1956 revolution in Nicosia
A commemorative event for Hungary’s National Day took place on Wednesday evening at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre in Nicosia, Cyprus, marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Approximately 400 people attended the gathering to honor the historical uprising.
Hungarian Ambassador to Cyprus, Krisztina Lakos, addressed the attendees, emphasizing that the values of freedom, national dignity, and democracy, which defined the 1956 revolution, remain relevant today. She noted that while Hungary and Cyprus followed different historical paths, both nations are united by a shared commitment to peace and sovereignty.
Lakos reaffirmed Hungary's support for the Republic of Cyprus and its commitment to a solution within the UN Security Council framework. She specifically highlighted Hungary’s ongoing contribution to regional stability through its participation in the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), a mission in which the country has been involved since 1993.
