Nicosia protest over workplace safety and public road works updates
The Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) is staging a protest in Nicosia on Thursday, October 22, 2026, to demand improved health and safety standards at workplaces. Demonstrators are scheduled to march from PEO offices along Digeni Akrita Avenue to the Ministry of Labour starting at 5:00 p.m. This action follows recent serious workplace accidents, including a fall involving three construction workers in Strovolos and a fatal incident in Peyia. Police have been deployed to manage traffic and ensure public safety, advising motorists to avoid the affected area and follow instructions.
Simultaneously, various road maintenance projects are underway across Cyprus. Asphalt paving continues on Demostheni Severi Avenue in Nicosia, while upcoming closures are scheduled for the Presidential Avenue on October 26 and 29. Furthermore, pipeline installation on Glafkou Kliridi Avenue in Latsia will close the road in both directions from 8:00 p.m. on October 23 until 2:00 p.m. on October 24. Maintenance works on highway drainage grates and lighting systems are also scheduled for late October, with authorities confirming that traffic will generally proceed normally, though partial lane or shoulder closures will occur in specific segments.
