Nicosia traffic disruptions due to protest and road works
The Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) is staging a protest march in Nicosia today, October 22, 2026, to demand improved health and safety standards in the workplace. Participants are gathering at 5:00 p.m. outside PEO offices before marching along Digeni Akrita Avenue to the Ministry of Labour. Police have been deployed to manage traffic and ensure public safety, urging motorists to avoid the affected area and comply with officer instructions. The demonstration follows recent industrial accidents, including a fall involving three construction workers in Strovolos and a fatal incident in Peyia last month, which have prompted unions to question current safety protocols.
Simultaneously, the Nicosia Municipality is conducting asphalt paving on Demostheni Severi Avenue today, leading to lane closures. Further road closures are scheduled in Nicosia, Engomi, and Agios Dometios districts between October 26 and November 5, 2026, to accommodate municipal infrastructure improvements. Additionally, the Department of Forests continues maintenance work on several highways, including the Larnaca-Paralimni and Nicosia-Limassol routes, through November 30, requiring intermittent lane closures on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
