Road maintenance updates and trade union protest in Cyprus
A protest march organized by the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) took place on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in Nicosia. Participants marched from the PEO offices along Digenis Akritas Avenue to the Ministry of Labour to highlight concerns regarding workplace health and safety. The demonstration followed recent industrial accidents, including a fatal incident in Peyia and injuries at a construction site in Strovolos, prompting unions to demand stricter safety measures across the country.
Simultaneously, the Department of Public Works and local municipalities have announced extensive road maintenance across Cyprus. Scheduled works include asphalt paving on Demostheni Severi Avenue in Nicosia (ending October 22), pipe installation on Glaukos Klerides Avenue in Latsia (October 23–24), and drainage cleaning on the Nicosia-Limassol highway (October 24). Further maintenance is planned for the Paphos-Limassol motorway near Pissouri and Konia from October 26 to October 30. Motorists are advised to expect temporary lane closures and traffic diversions while these operations are underway. Authorities urge the public to follow temporary signage and police instructions to ensure safety and traffic flow during these periods.
