Retired Turkish lieutenant general arrested in occupied Cyprus for smuggling meat
A retired lieutenant general, identified by the initials V.M. and described as a former commander of Turkish forces in Cyprus, was arrested on October 22, 2026, at the Agios Dometios crossing point. The arrest occurred when authorities in the occupied areas discovered 305 kilograms of beef and 41 kilograms of lamb tail fat in the trunk of his vehicle as he was returning to his residence in Kyrenia from the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus.
The contraband goods, valued at approximately 411,370 Turkish Lira (about 7,472 euros), were confiscated as evidence. According to local media, this is not the suspect's first brush with the law; he had previously been apprehended for attempting to smuggle cigarettes through the VIP lane at the illegal Ercan airport.
Following his appearance in a local 'court', the suspect was released under strict conditions. These include a travel ban preventing him from leaving the self-proclaimed entity, a cash bail of 80,000 Turkish Lira (approx. 1,255 euros), the provision of a 600,000 Turkish Lira bond signed by two guarantors, and a mandatory weekly check-in at a local police station. Legal proceedings regarding the smuggling charges are expected to continue.
