President Christodoulides calls for activating EU mutual defense clause
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has formally requested the resumption of discussions within European Union institutions regarding the practical application of the mutual defense clause. In a letter dated October 20 addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Christodoulides emphasized that the current climate of heightened geopolitical uncertainty necessitates a clear strategy and operational readiness regarding this provision.
Article 42.7 of the Treaty of Lisbon mandates that if an EU member state becomes the victim of armed aggression on its territory, other member states have an obligation to provide aid and assistance by all means in their power. Christodoulides highlighted the strategic importance of this clause, urging the Commission to provide details on current proposals under consideration and to establish a definitive timeline for future steps.
This initiative comes amidst growing international security threats that have prompted renewed interest in European defense mechanisms. By seeking transparency on the legislative and procedural status of Article 42.7, the President aims to ensure that the European Union is prepared to respond collectively to potential security crises.
