Cyprus Interior Minister announces new rural development measures
On October 22, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Interior, Constantinos Ioannou, met with members of the Union of Cyprus Communities to present new development initiatives aimed at revitalizing rural areas. The government is focused on addressing structural challenges and improving the quality of life for residents in remote regions through better coordination and administrative support.
During the meeting, Ioannou outlined a new procedure for registering agricultural roads, which includes set timelines and improved oversight. Key figures provided include the processing of 500 pending cases and the official registration of 112 new roads. Additionally, 524 land plots have been made available to eligible beneficiaries. The new framework involves local District Administrations and private surveyors, with road registration proceeding through landowner consent or expropriation.
Furthermore, the Ministry proposed a reduction in the financial contribution required from local communities for urban planning projects. This initiative follows consultations with the Union of Cyprus Communities to resolve long-standing administrative backlogs and boost local economic growth. The ongoing collaboration aims to provide sustainable infrastructure support while ensuring that rural communities are effectively integrated into national development goals.
