Businessman John Christodoulou considers presidential run
British Cypriot billionaire John Christodoulou has publicly confirmed he is considering a bid for the 2028 Cypriot presidential election. Speaking to local media, the businessman described the potential move as a difficult decision, noting that he is currently weighing the impact on his personal life against his desire to contribute to the nation. He emphasized that he does not view himself as a traditional politician, stating that he neither speaks nor thinks like one. Christodoulou expects to reach a final decision by early 2027, specifically mentioning January or February as the target timeframe.
Regarding his political leanings, Christodoulou stated, "my mind is with Disy, but my heart is with Akel." He highlighted the Cyprus problem as a primary motivation, describing himself as a refugee who left the island at age nine. He expressed deep frustration over the 52-year impasse, calling for urgent solutions to restore security and recover lost ancestral lands. Sources report that his potential candidacy has been discussed in connection with political figures such as Fidias Panayiotou. While acknowledging the challenges and potential political hostility he may face, he maintains that Cyprus needs to accelerate its decision-making process to secure its future.
