Series of arson attacks and vehicle fires reported across Cyprus
Recent days have seen a string of incidents involving vehicle fires across Cyprus, with police confirming several as deliberate arson attacks. On October 23, a car was set on fire in Frenaros, an act police later classified as arson after finding flammable materials at the scene. This followed an earlier, non-criminal electrical fault that caused a fire in a private parking area in Paralimni on October 22.
Over the weekend, criminal activity escalated in other regions. In the late hours of October 24, a vehicle belonging to a former police officer was torched outside a car rental business in Agios Tychonas, Limassol. Furthermore, on October 25 at approximately 3:00 am, another car was destroyed by arson in Emba, Paphos, where investigators also discovered traces of accelerants. Additionally, a 23-year-old individual was arrested and remanded for five days in connection with an attempted arson case in Limassol.
Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage and gathering evidence across the affected districts. While investigations continue, no suspects have been identified for the vehicle arsons, and the motive remains under investigation. The former police officer targeted in Limassol stated he has no known disputes, leaving the specific cause behind the attack unclear.
