Police investigate viral video featuring sensitive criminal case documents
The Cyprus Police have launched an investigation following a complaint from Akel General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou regarding a viral social media video posted by an Apoel fan page. The video contained what appeared to be original witness statements, signatures, and medical reports from criminal investigations. Stefanou formally requested an explanation from Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis, questioning how such sensitive documents reached third parties and criticizing current data management practices.
Police spokesmen Vyron Vyronos and Michalis Michail emphasized that it is premature to characterize the incident as a leak. They explained that in criminal proceedings, evidentiary material is legally disclosed to defendants and their legal counsel. Preliminary assessments suggest the documents date back to the 2008-2010 period. Authorities are currently verifying the authenticity of the material and the circumstances under which the footage was captured.
The investigation remains ongoing, with the possibility of forming a specialized task force to determine how these documents were accessed. The incident has prompted broader concerns regarding the security of official department files and the handling of sensitive case records.
