Mixed compliance with heating oil tax reduction in Cyprus
On October 23, 2026, a government-mandated reduction in the excise tax on heating oil came into effect in Cyprus, intended to lower retail prices by 6.39 cents per liter. Despite the policy, monitoring revealed inconsistent implementation across gas stations throughout the country.
Data sources provide slightly differing figures regarding non-compliance. The Consumers Association, led by Marios Drousiotis, reported that 43 out of 302 surveyed stations failed to implement the reduction by the morning of October 23. Conversely, the official Consumer Protection Service, which concluded its analysis by noon the same day, found that out of 290 stations, 22 failed to reduce prices or even recorded price increases. While approximately 92% of surveyed stations complied with the price cut, the discrepancy highlights a lack of uniform market adjustment.
The Consumer Protection Service has published a list of non-compliant stations to ensure public transparency. The government continues to monitor the situation to protect consumers from potential profiteering following the tax relief measure.
