Nine killed in terrorist attack at Jordanian church
On October 23, 2026, gunmen opened fire on a funeral service at the Greek Orthodox Saint George Church in the village of Hamoud, located in Jordan's Karak governorate. The attack, which authorities classified as an act of extremist terrorism, resulted in the deaths of nine people and left 25 to 40 others injured, according to reports from Jordanian officials and hospitals. Witnesses described a chaotic scene where masked assailants fired weapons for several minutes while attendees attempted to hide inside the building. No group has officially claimed responsibility for the assault.
Following the massacre, King Abdullah II ordered security forces to respond with an "iron fist." In response, Jordanian authorities increased security at malls, foreign embassies, and other public locations. Following an intensive manhunt, state television reported on October 26 that security forces apprehended three suspects after a shootout at an abandoned house in Karak. The suspects, who were wounded during the exchange of fire, were taken into custody and face charges for the attack. International leaders, including the President of Cyprus and officials from the Vatican, expressed their condolences and condemned the violence against the Christian community.
