EDEK holds statutory congress amid internal realignment
On October 25, 2026, the EDEK party held a statutory congress at the Journalistic House in Nicosia. Under the new leadership of Sofia Christodoulou Makri, the event focused on organizational restructuring and revising the party statute to modernize internal procedures, enhance transparency, and foster democracy. The congress follows the unconditional lifting of previous member expulsions, leading to the return of prominent figures such as former MEP Dimitris Papadakis and former MP Kostis Efstathiou, who attended the proceedings.
The event occurs during a period of significant internal tension, as eleven members of the Political Bureau, associated with former leader Marinos Sizopoulos, challenged the legitimacy of the assembly. Despite these disputes and the notable absence of Sizopoulos and his supporters, the party continues preparations for its electoral congress scheduled for December 12 and 13. Proposed amendments include reducing the waiting period for new members to obtain voting rights from six months to one, and establishing youth quotas for party committees. The leadership aims to solidify these reforms to stabilize the party after it lost parliamentary representation in the May elections.
