EDEK party holds statutory congress to finalize internal reforms
On October 25, 2026, the EDEK party held a critical statutory congress at the Journalists' House in Nicosia. Under the leadership of Sofia Christodoulou Makri, the event sought to restructure the party’s operations and foster reconciliation following a period of internal division. A major highlight was the unconditional lifting of past expulsions, which facilitated the return of prominent figures, including former MEP Dimitris Papadakis and former MP Kostis Efstathiou, who attended the proceedings.
The congress approved a comprehensive series of statutory changes with near-unanimous support. These reforms include strengthening collective bodies, enhancing internal democracy, reducing the waiting period for new members to obtain voting rights from six months to one, and reintroducing the position of Organizational Secretary while abolishing the role of General Director. The initiative aims to modernize the party and ensure financial and organizational stability ahead of the elective congress scheduled for December 12-13, 2026.
Despite the leadership’s efforts toward unity, the event was marked by the absence of former party leader Marinos Sizopoulos and eleven members of the Political Bureau who criticized the legitimacy of the process. Current leadership continues to focus on financial audits and organizational restructuring as they prepare for the upcoming leadership elections, which will determine the party's direction for the next five years.
