EDEK party holds statutory congress to restructure internal operations
The EDEK party held a statutory congress in Nicosia on October 25, 2026, aimed at reforming internal procedures and overcoming a period of internal conflict. Chaired by party leader Sofia Christodoulou Makri, the event sought to establish a framework for party reorganization, transparency, and the empowerment of collective bodies. Notable attendees included former officials such as Kostis Efstathiou and Dimitris Papadakis, following the lifting of their previous suspensions, while former party president Marinos Sizopoulos and a group of eleven dissident Political Bureau members were notably absent.
The congress saw the near-unanimous approval of several constitutional amendments. Key decisions include the abolition of the General Manager position, the establishment of an independent Ethics Committee, the expansion of the Central Committee and Political Bureau, and the reinstatement of the Central Organizational Secretary and Executive Secretariat. These changes aim to enhance internal democracy and member participation.
Following the success of this event, EDEK has finalized its roadmap for leadership elections. Provincial electoral conferences are scheduled throughout November, culminating in the main Electoral Congress on December 12, 2026. Elections for new leadership and Central Committee members will follow on December 13, 2026, with candidate nominations closing on November 30.
