UN representative commemorates UN Day in Nicosia
On Saturday, October 24, 2026, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of UNFICYP, Colin Stewart (referred to as Kassim Diagne in sources), hosted a UN Open Day event in Nicosia. The gathering served to mark the 81st anniversary of the United Nations, highlighting the organization's enduring role in international diplomacy and humanitarian efforts.
During the event, Stewart delivered a message on behalf of Secretary-General António Guterres. The address emphasized that progress is built upon cooperation, dialogue, and a shared commitment to the common good. Guterres noted that for 81 years, the UN has focused on resolving disputes through international law and diplomacy rather than military force. Furthermore, the organization continues to prioritize the eradication of poverty and hunger, the protection of human rights, and the provision of life-saving assistance to populations affected by war, natural disasters, and displacement.
The event reinforced the UN's stated mission to foster global stability through collaborative action. By commemorating 81 years of service, the speakers underscored the necessity of multilateralism to address contemporary challenges, ranging from environmental health to global trade and technological development.
