Italy deploys military forces in Milan to combat civil unrest
The Italian government has authorized the deployment of 500 additional soldiers from the Folgore Paratrooper Brigade to Milan, effective Saturday, following a week of looting and violent clashes. These military personnel will assist 5,000 police officers and law enforcement agents in maintaining public order. The operation, known as 'Safe Streets,' involves the use of light armored Lince vehicles and drones to monitor potential unrest.
This decision follows recent civil disturbances and comes amidst new government measures announced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which include stricter penalties for minors involved in violent protests. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini stated that the deployment serves as a security guarantee for citizens. Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala has expressed support for the measure while remaining concerned about further violence during the weekend.
Authorities are actively monitoring internet communications for calls to illegal activity and have increased surveillance at railway stations. These measures are intended to prevent a recurrence of the riots that affected the city one week prior, as further demonstrations are expected across various Italian cities.
