Greek sports minister initiates meetings regarding basketball federation investigations
Greek Minister of Sports Yiannis Vroutsis has intervened in the ongoing crisis within the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) following serious allegations involving institutional figures in administration and refereeing. Speaking on national television, Vroutsis emphasized that these events are negatively impacting the broader sporting community and urged for transparency and institutional reform. While acknowledging the presumption of innocence for those currently under investigation by judicial authorities, the minister highlighted the state's responsibility to address the situation and restore public trust.
To manage the crisis, Vroutsis has called a formal meeting with the board members of the EOK. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 26, 2026, at 12:00 at the Ministry of Sports. The minister coordinated this through Michalis Melis, the Vice President of the EOK and President of ESAKE. The primary objective of the session is to discuss the future of Greek basketball and determine immediate steps to protect the sport's reputation. The government maintains that while it respects the self-governance of sports federations, it must ensure that the sector operates with absolute integrity moving forward.
