Cyprus Health Ministry prioritizes access to care for metabolic disease patients
On October 24, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Health, Neofytos Charalampidis, addressed a conference organized by the 'Aspida Zois' (Shield of Life) association. The event, titled 'Inherited Metabolic Diseases: Evolving Horizons in Patient Care,' brought together medical experts from Cyprus and abroad, as well as patients and their families to discuss current challenges.
Minister Charalampidis emphasized that the government is actively working to ensure patient access to essential medications and specialized nutritional products. He highlighted the necessity of a coordinated approach to services, stating that clinical management must be combined with consistent psychological support for patients and their families. The Minister acknowledged that managing inherited metabolic disorders requires highly specialized knowledge and long-term monitoring.
Currently, diagnostic services and patient follow-ups in Cyprus are primarily conducted by the Clinic of Genetics and Inborn Errors of Metabolism. The government intends to use the insights gathered from this multi-stakeholder discussion to better align healthcare policies with the actual needs of this patient population, ensuring that scientific progress in the field translates into improved quality of life for those living with these conditions.
