Nikaia municipal officials deny plans to rename street after Giorgos Mazonakis
The Municipality of Nikaia-Agios Ioannis Rentis has officially dismissed reports suggesting that a local street would be renamed after the popular singer Giorgos Mazonakis. Speculation had circulated in late October 2026, proposing that the renaming of Markou Botsari Street was being considered as a tribute to the singer's artistic career and his strong personal connection to his birthplace.
Following the reports, Mayor Kostas Maragakis issued a categorical statement on October 25, 2026, declaring that the street name will remain unchanged. The mayor emphasized that the municipal administration respects the city's history and would not alter the existing street name. He further noted that while there is an acknowledged desire to honor the singer, the current proposal to rename Markou Botsari Street is definitively off the table.
Despite rejecting the street renaming, the municipal authorities indicated that they are still reviewing alternative ways to pay tribute to the late artist. Various proposals are currently being evaluated with the goal of honoring his memory in a manner that remains respectful and responsible toward both the community and the singer's legacy.
