Developments in Disy leadership race and Akel disciplinary action
The Democratic Rally (DISY) party in Cyprus is entering a formal nomination phase for the 2028 presidential candidacy. On October 26, Averof Neofytou and George Pamboridis are expected to submit their official candidacies at the party’s headquarters on Pindarou Street. Both candidates have already secured the required 500 supporting signatures to qualify for the internal election scheduled for November 28. Party leadership is currently focused on maintaining unity amidst the competition.
Simultaneously, the political landscape is marked by the indefinite expulsion of former Limassol MP Costas Kostas from AKEL. The decision was made unanimously by the party's Limassol District Committee following a report from the Central Control Committee regarding alleged anti-party behavior. Kostas, who served three terms, was ineligible for re-election due to internal term limits. He confirmed receiving notification of the expulsion in early October but has declined to provide further comments on the matter. The action represents the second most severe disciplinary sanction under the party's constitution.
