Former AKEL MP Kostas Kostas expelled from party indefinitely
The Limassol Provincial Committee of the AKEL party has unanimously decided to indefinitely expel former MP Kostas Kostas from the party. The decision was reached in early October following a report from the Central Control Committee, which is responsible for investigating breaches of the party charter. While the party has not yet formally communicated the move via official channels from its central offices, Kostas confirmed that he was notified of the decision by telephone earlier this month.
According to party officials, the disciplinary action was taken after an assessment of Kostas's recent behaviors, which were deemed inconsistent with the party's principles and standards. The leadership cited multiple instances of anti-party conduct as the primary reason for this disciplinary measure, which is considered the second-most severe penalty under the party’s charter, surpassed only by permanent expulsion.
Kostas Kostas, who was first elected to the parliament in 2011 at the age of 40, was known for his parliamentary diligence. In the 2021 elections, he secured the highest number of preferential votes in Limassol with 6,212. Despite his previous electoral success, the ongoing tensions between him and the party leadership have now culminated in this official sanction. The former MP stated he does not intend to provide further comments regarding this matter.
