Hellenic Basketball Federation president resigns amid match-fixing scandal
On October 25, 2026, Vangelis Liolios, president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK), announced his resignation and total withdrawal from basketball activities while appearing before an investigator in Athens. This development follows a high-profile investigation into allegations of systemic match-fixing involving 49 games across various leagues.
Liolios and his associate, Giorgos Mavraganis, were detained by police before their testimony. During the proceedings, which lasted several hours, Liolios submitted financial documents covering the last decade and categorically denied all charges, claiming the accusations are part of a conspiracy to remove him from office. Mavraganis also testified and denied the allegations. This case is part of a broader crackdown that has already seen a former referee, Petros Papapetrou, ordered into temporary custody following an extensive inquiry by the Athens Prosecutor's Office.
Following the resignation, the EOK scheduled an emergency board meeting to discuss administrative restructuring. While some, such as Dimos Stasinopoulos, have publicly called for a complete leadership overhaul under figures like Panagiotis Giannakakis, the legal proceedings continue. Prosecutors and the investigating magistrate are now evaluating the testimonies to decide whether to impose restrictive measures or order further detention for the accused as the investigation expands to additional suspects.
