Police search for man impersonating an officer to scam elderly residents
Authorities in Cyprus have identified 44-year-old Andreas Louros as a suspect in a series of fraud cases targeting elderly residents. The suspect allegedly wore a shirt with a "Police" logo and posed as an officer to demand on-the-spot cash payments for fake traffic fines. Two incidents were reported in Kalo Chorio, Larnaca, where victims were defrauded of 50 and 5 euros respectively. Reports indicate the suspect would stop vehicles, check documentation, and falsely claim that the drivers lacked insurance.
The investigation, which began in October 2026, links these events to similar fraudulent activities reported in the Nicosia district between February and October 2026. While initial local reports mentioned varying amounts, police have confirmed that the suspect has targeted multiple people, in some instances obtaining up to 150 euros. Police have released the suspect's photograph and personal details, urging the public to exercise extreme caution.
Currently, the Cyprus Police are actively searching for Louros and have requested that anyone with information contact the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or the Citizen's Hotline. Authorities have reiterated that official police fines are only payable through the government's online portal and never in cash to officers on the road.
