Health minister calls for coordinated action against diabetes and obesity
On October 25, 2026, Cyprus Health Minister Neofytos Charalampidis addressed the 9th Conference on Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism held at the Mediterranean Beach Hotel in Limassol. He highlighted the urgent necessity for multisectoral collaboration to combat the rising prevalence of diabetes and obesity, which currently affect a significant portion of the population and place increasing pressure on health care systems.
The minister emphasized that effective long-term health outcomes require structured preventive strategies, policy reforms, and community awareness programs. He stated that the Ministry of Health is committed to redesigning and organizing public health services to better address the needs of patients, noting that the field of endocrinology encompasses specialized areas such as pediatric and reproductive endocrinology.
Beyond clinical interventions, Charalampidis pointed to the importance of continuous professional training for health care workers and the promotion of research in the field. The initiative aims to shift from reactive care to a more proactive approach, integrating coordinated actions across various medical disciplines to manage chronic metabolic conditions more effectively.
