AKEL prepares for 2028 presidential elections focusing on progressive change
The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, recently held meetings with former party officials in Nicosia to discuss the party's strategy for the 2028 presidential elections. Stefanou emphasized the necessity of achieving "progressive change" in Cyprus, aiming to reverse current policies that he argues have led to increased social inequalities and deficits in social welfare. The party leadership intends to prioritize the development of a common progressive program and the formation of alliances before selecting a candidate for the presidency.
Unlike other political parties, such as DISY, which have already entered an early campaign period, AKEL is following a more structured and deliberative process. The party's internal protocol requires extensive consultation within its Central Committee and with various stakeholders to determine its electoral strategy. Having been out of power since 2013, the party is currently evaluating three potential paths: running a party-affiliated candidate, pursuing a strategy similar to the 2023 elections by seeking a broader alliance, or identifying a candidate with wide societal appeal. The ultimate goal remains a victory that ensures a change in the country's current direction through collective efforts.
