Cyprus government calls for resumption of unification talks
On October 25, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Marios Mousiouttas, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resuming reunification negotiations. Speaking at a memorial service in Nicosia, the Minister stated that talks should pick up from where they left off at Crans-Montana, aiming for a solution based on United Nations Security Council resolutions that is compatible with European Union law and values.
Mousiouttas emphasized that Cyprus maintains a clear Western and European orientation while seeking to unify the country's territory, people, and institutions. He noted that the occupation of a portion of Cyprus represents the occupation of European soil. The Minister argued that diplomatic efforts must be supported by a strong domestic foundation, including a resilient economy and a credible defense, to prevent international isolation.
While the government is actively pursuing a diplomatic resolution, it is simultaneously focusing on strengthening national deterrence capabilities. This dual approach is intended to provide security for the island while ensuring that political progress remains a top priority, though no specific timeline for the resumption of negotiations was announced.
