National Unity Party faces internal turmoil following candidate selection
The National Unity Party (UBP) in the occupied territories of Cyprus is experiencing significant internal upheaval following the primary elections held to select 50 candidates for the legislative elections scheduled for December 6. The process, which involved 8,929 voters, faced immediate controversy when 17 candidates filed formal objections regarding the accuracy of the results. In response to these challenges, officials have initiated a verification process of the electronic counting records at the party's headquarters, while protesters are demanding a manual recount.
Amidst the instability, Hakan Dincyurek announced his withdrawal from the candidate list and stated his intention to resign from his position as the so-called Minister of Health. Furthermore, the head of the election council, Huseyin Pasia, was hospitalized after falling ill. Reports also indicate that UBP leader and 'prime minister' Unal Ustel traveled urgently to Ankara on October 25, though no official explanation for the visit has been provided. The party currently continues its efforts to address the disputes and finalize the candidate list before the upcoming election date.
