Cyprus emerges as a rapidly growing startup ecosystem in the European Union
Cyprus has solidified its position as the fastest-growing startup ecosystem in the European Union, according to the 2026 StartupBlink Global Startup Ecosystem Index. The nation climbed six places to rank 34th globally and reached 20th in Europe and 17th within the EU. The ecosystem has recorded 62.7% growth this year, a rate nearly double that of its closest regional competitor, Romania, and is currently valued at $4.2 billion.
The technology sector now contributes over €4 billion annually, accounting for approximately 15% of the national GDP and supporting nearly 70,000 jobs. Startups linked to Cyprus raised more than €112 million in the first ten months of 2026, nearly matching the total funding recorded for the entire preceding year. This expansion is supported by increased funding from the Research and Innovation Foundation and a growing network of accelerators and industry bodies.
Historically, Cyprus focused on attracting international technology firms, which now serve as a foundation for local entrepreneurship. The current strategic priority has shifted toward scaling local startups and integrating them into the broader economy. While the island continues to leverage its geographic position at the crossroads of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, the focus remains on transforming initial relocation success into a sustainable, domestic innovation economy.
