Yellow weather warning issued for Cyprus as storms approach
A low-pressure system moving from the Aegean region has begun to affect Cyprus, prompting the Department of Meteorology to issue a yellow warning for severe weather. The warning is in effect from 2:00 AM until 6:00 PM on October 28, covering the national holiday. Forecasters, including Andreas Chrysanthou and Panagiotis Georgiou, anticipate isolated rain and thunderstorms, with potential for hail and wind gusts reaching 7 to 8 Beaufort. Rainfall intensity is expected to range between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour.
The unsettled weather is projected to begin in the western half of the island before spreading to other regions by midday. These conditions have raised concerns regarding the outdoor student parades scheduled for October 28, as local reports note that similar weather has led to cancellations in the past. While Wednesday's phenomena are expected to be significant, meteorologists highlight that Thursday, October 29, will be the day of peak intensity, with a second yellow warning likely to be issued. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly, falling below seasonal averages by the end of the week, with a gradual recovery starting Friday.
