Iran calls for national gas consumption cuts as winter approaches
On October 25, 2026, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued a formal call for a nationwide 10% reduction in gas consumption. The measure is designed to mitigate supply shortages as the country prepares for the winter season, during which temperatures in northern regions frequently drop below 0°C.
Authorities stated that the ongoing energy crisis has been significantly aggravated by the conflict with the United States and Israel, which began in February. According to Tehran, a 40-day period of intense military engagement earlier this year resulted in damage to critical energy infrastructure, including gas refineries. Additionally, the situation is strained by a U.S. naval blockade that has severely limited oil exports and forced a shift toward land-based trade routes.
To incentivize public compliance with the conservation efforts, the Iranian government has announced a financial reward system. Citizens who reduce their gas usage will receive direct payments to their bank accounts, with the amount corresponding to the volume of fuel saved. The initiative occurs amid rising concerns regarding the potential resumption of large-scale military operations and ongoing economic pressure on the state.
