Diplomatic efforts continue in Cyprus ahead of UN envoy's visit
President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman met on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, to discuss the Cyprus issue under UN auspices. The leaders held a one-on-one session followed by joint meetings with the Technical Committees on Youth and Cultural Heritage, as well as the Civil Society Advisory Body. Christodoulides described the discussions as constructive and noted that the two sides agreed not to issue a joint statement or make specific comments on substantive issues, aiming to preserve the momentum for the upcoming visit of the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin.
Holguin is scheduled to arrive in Cyprus on October 29. Her visit is expected to facilitate further dialogue, with a trilateral meeting involving the two leaders already confirmed for November 9. Prior to his meeting with Erhurman, Christodoulides consulted with the UN Special Representative in Cyprus, Khassim Diagne, raising concerns regarding the status quo in the buffer zone. The President also indicated that he has presented new proposals on crossing points and other confidence-building measures, awaiting a formal response to continue the peace process.
