Diplomatic efforts escalate ahead of Cyprus talks
Diplomatic efforts regarding the Cyprus issue have intensified as President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman prepare for a high-level meeting scheduled for Tuesday in the UN-protected area of Nicosia airport. The meeting follows a session between President Christodoulides and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative Khassim Diagne, where the President emphasized the government's demand to prevent status quo violations in the buffer zone. Following their bilateral talks, the two leaders are expected to engage with the Technical Committees on Youth and Cultural Heritage and the Civil Society Advisory Body.
These developments serve as preparation for the visit of the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, who arrives on October 29. A trilateral meeting involving Holguin and both leaders is set for November 9. Current discussions are focusing on specific confidence-building measures, including the opening of new crossing points, such as Athienou, and proposals concerning the fenced-off area of Famagusta and direct trade. President Christodoulides has expressed hope that new alternative proposals regarding crossing points will help resolve the ongoing deadlock and demonstrate political will.
