UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin arrives in Cyprus for renewed diplomatic talks
United Nations Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, is scheduled to arrive in Cyprus on Thursday, October 29, 2026, to engage in a new round of consultations aimed at restarting negotiations to resolve the Cyprus issue. Ahead of her visit, President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman held a constructive meeting on Tuesday, October 27, where they discussed technical committee proposals and agreed to avoid further public statements on specific substance matters until the envoy’s visit concludes. Both sides also agreed that no joint statement would be issued following their recent talks, characterizing the decision as a mutual choice rather than a sign of a deadlock.
During his prior preparations, President Christodoulides met with the Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Khassim Diagne, to stress the necessity of maintaining the status quo within the buffer zone. Holguin is set to hold individual meetings with President Christodoulides on Friday and with Tufan Erhurman on Monday. The primary focus of the diplomatic efforts remains the preparation for a trilateral meeting between the two leaders and the UN envoy, currently scheduled for November 9, 2026.
