Three dead after vehicle falls into Piraeus harbor
On the evening of October 25, 2026, a tragic accident occurred at Gate E2 of the port of Piraeus, where a car fell into the sea, resulting in the deaths of all three occupants. The deceased were identified as an 82-year-old man, who was reportedly driving, his spouse, and their 45-year-old son.
A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched immediately following the incident, involving the Hellenic Coast Guard, the Underwater Missions Unit, the Pilotage Service, and private vessels. Initially, the 45-year-old man was recovered from the water without vital signs. Subsequently, the two elderly passengers were retrieved from the submerged vehicle, also deceased. Three ambulances from the National Centre for Emergency Care were dispatched to the scene to assist.
While investigations into the exact causes of the incident are ongoing, some reports suggest that the 82-year-old driver may have lost control of the vehicle due to adverse weather conditions caused by heavy rainfall that occurred earlier in the day. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy to determine the definitive sequence of events.
