Three family members die after vehicle falls into Piraeus port
On the evening of Sunday, October 25, 2026, a fatal incident occurred at Gate E2 of the port of Piraeus, resulting in the deaths of three family members. The victims, an 82-year-old man, his 79-year-old wife, and their 45-year-old son, were inside a grey Toyota RAV4 that fell into the sea while disembarking from the ferry Diagoras.
Preliminary reports suggest the accident occurred during heavy rainfall, which significantly reduced visibility in the area. Authorities believe that the 82-year-old driver may have made a steering error due to these poor weather conditions, leading the vehicle to veer off course and submerge. Emergency responders, including the Coast Guard, the Underwater Operations Unit, and private vessels, launched an immediate rescue operation. Despite these efforts, the 45-year-old was initially recovered without signs of life, followed shortly by the recovery of the two elderly passengers who remained trapped inside the vehicle. Three ambulances from the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAB) were dispatched to the scene to provide assistance.
The incident remains under investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy. Authorities are currently reviewing the sequence of events as the vehicle exited the ferry during the storm.
