Nicos Anastasiades proposes cross-party agreement for 2028 presidential elections
Former President Nicos Anastasiades has proposed a political agreement regarding the 2028 presidential elections in Cyprus, aiming to consolidate support between the Democratic Rally (DISY) candidate and Nikos Christodoulides. The core of the proposal suggests that whichever of the two candidates advances to the second round should receive the backing of the other. This strategy is presented as a measure to prevent the return of AKEL to power and to facilitate the reunification of DISY following the electoral process.
Under this framework, DISY voters would essentially be encouraged to choose between Nikos Christodoulides and the official DISY candidate—either Averof Neofytou or George Pamboridis—based on personal preference during the first round. Party leadership, including DISY President Annita Demetriou, has reportedly expressed concerns that align with the goals of maintaining party cohesion and electoral success. While the proposal remains a subject of ongoing discussion, it marks a significant shift in internal party strategy as political maneuvering ahead of the 2028 cycle intensifies.
