Internal disputes arise at EDEK statutory congress
On October 25, 2026, the EDEK party held a statutory congress that sparked significant internal criticism regarding attendance and procedural transparency. Marios Channidis, a member of the party's political bureau and one of eleven signatories who previously criticized party president Sofia Christodoulou Makri for delaying a meeting on October 19, boycotted the event. He questioned the legitimacy of the process, noting that only about 150 of the party's 9,500 members were present. Channidis highlighted that the low turnout in such a critical meeting indicates a deep political and institutional concern, further alleging that some attendees had previously publicly supported other political factions during recent parliamentary elections.
Following the congress, Channidis expressed grievances regarding the management of statutory changes, claiming he was only informed about the amendments via the internet four days prior, despite requesting briefings in earlier sessions. While he supports the necessity of updating the party's statutes, he criticized the lack of inclusion of collective bodies. Channidis emphasized the need for party unity and stated that while returning members are welcome, their integration must respect existing party functions and elected organs, rather than bypassing established institutional procedures.
