Cyprus announces new measures to combat gender-based and domestic violence
Cypriot authorities have announced a series of new initiatives to address gender-based and domestic violence following a hearing at the House Human Rights Committee. Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris confirmed that the 'Red Flag' platform is being developed to facilitate inter-agency communication and risk prevention. This system will allow for the recording of non-criminal incidents that pose a risk of violence, with key services expected to be functional within the first quarter of 2027. Some reports indicate the platform may see initial operational status by the end of 2026.
In addition to the digital platform, the government is expanding support infrastructure. Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou stated that the 'House of the Woman' model is being reviewed for expansion into other districts, with a new shelter currently under development in Larnaca. Furthermore, Minister Fytiris announced that mandatory psychometric testing will be implemented every three years for individuals who possess firearms. This measure was pushed forward following a high-profile attempted femicide that occurred during the summer of 2026.
The committee chairman, Christos Christofides, noted that while progress remains incremental, these steps represent a consistent effort to improve victim protection protocols. The government continues to refine the legal and social framework to ensure better inter-departmental cooperation.
