Averof Neophytou and Giorgos Pamboridis launch leadership bids for DISY nomination
Former DISY leader Averof Neophytou and candidate Giorgos Pamborides have formally submitted their candidacies for the Democratic Rally (DISY) presidential nomination. The internal election, scheduled for November 28, 2026, marks the first time the party's 49,000 members will choose their candidate via an open vote. The two candidates arrived at party headquarters on Nicosia’s Pindarou Street with contrasting styles: Neophytou held a high-profile demonstration with a large crowd of supporters, while Pamborides chose a low-profile, understated arrival.
Despite their different campaign strategies, both candidates pledged to unite behind the eventual winner to maintain party cohesion. This commitment follows recent internal tensions, including a controversial resignation letter from party official Haris Georgiades, who expressed opposition to Neophytou’s candidacy. Party leader Annita Demetriou has called for calm, urging members to maintain unity as the party seeks to avoid a repeat of the fractures experienced during the 2023 elections.
While Pamborides has suggested he would consider stepping down in favor of a third, consensus-based candidate if one emerged, he remains optimistic about his own chances. He is set to hold a press conference on October 29 to outline his political platform. Both men have recently appeared together at public events, including 28th October memorial services, in a symbolic effort to project stability amidst the competitive selection process.
