President Macron visits Marseille to discuss protest security and public order
French President Emmanuel Macron made an unannounced visit to Marseille on Monday, October 26, to praise the security measures implemented during recent protests. Macron acknowledged that the police presence during the unrest on October 17 was insufficient due to an underestimation of far-left mobilization. However, he maintained that the events of Saturday, October 24, were managed effectively, successfully preserving public order while protecting the right to protest.
Looking ahead, the President warned that the upcoming Saturday, October 31, and the scheduled strike on November 5 remain dangerous. To prevent further chaos, the administration will enforce strict rules: demonstrations must follow pre-approved routes located outside city centers to protect local businesses. Macron expressed that it is abnormal for France to be in such a state of unrest six months before the presidential election, though he stated that current emergency powers, which would expand police authority, are not necessary at this time.
Macron emphasized that the government will continue to remain vigilant and organized. He expressed confidence that if the authorities perform their duties effectively, the situation will eventually stabilize through both the restoration of order and by addressing the permanent expectations of the public.
