AEK Larnaca defeats Omonia 2-0 to claim the league lead
AEK Larnaca climbed to the top of the Cyprus League standings after a 2-0 victory against Omonia at the AEK Arena on October 26, 2026. The win, marking the seventh matchday of the championship, moved AEK to 16 points, leaving Omonia in fourth place with 12 points.
The match was defined by the clinical performance of AEK's attackers and the stellar goalkeeping of Alberto Paleari. Riad Bajic opened the scoring in the 49th minute following an assist from Miramon. In the 69th minute, Amin Layouni doubled the lead by capitalizing on a defensive error by the visitors. Despite Omonia controlling large parts of the game and creating significant chances—including a 54th-minute shot by Evandro that hit the post—Paleari repeatedly denied them, notably stopping Dionis and Andreou.
Following this win, AEK coach Ruben Selles expressed satisfaction with the team's defensive and clinical display. AEK now turns its focus to upcoming fixtures against Krasava ENY, Karmiotissa, and Olympiakos, aiming to maintain its position at the top of the league.
