Cyprus commemorates the anniversary of October 28, 1940
Cyprus is holding nationwide commemorations to mark the national anniversary of October 28, 1940, honoring the historic 'Ohi' Day. On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, a solemn doxology will be held at the Apostle Barnabas Cathedral in Nicosia, presided over by Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus, with the presence of President Nikos Christodoulides, House Speaker Annita Demetriou, and the Greek Ambassador Konstantinos Kollias. The official panegyric speech will be delivered by Minister of Agriculture Christos Senekis.
Following the religious service, a parade will take place along Homer Avenue in Nicosia. Educational institutions and organized groups are participating, with delegations of 52 people per unit representing schools and universities. Meanwhile, commemorative events have already commenced in Paphos and Polis Chrysochous. On October 27, a public event was held at the Markideio Municipal Theater featuring a lecture by Professor Pantelis Voutouris on the representation of the 1940 war in the works of poets George Seferis and Odysseas Elytis, accompanied by the musical work 'Katachnia'.
These events reflect the ongoing national tradition of honoring the resistance and sacrifices of the Hellenic world during the war period. Schools across the country have undergone weeks of preparation to ensure participation in these official ceremonies, following guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education to maintain the solemnity and decorum of the occasion.
