Vangelis Liolios denies charges in match-fixing case
Vangelis Liolios, the president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK), formally testified on October 27, 2026, regarding 49 charges related to alleged match-fixing. During his testimony, Liolios vehemently denied any criminal involvement, asserting that he has been the victim of extortion attempts and a coordinated effort to destroy his personal and professional reputation.
In his defense, Liolios addressed specific details, including his meeting with Maroussi BC owner Dimos Stasinopoulos, and challenged the credibility of witnesses against him. He maintained that evidence does not demonstrate any personal interference in refereeing decisions. To demonstrate his commitment to the legal process, Liolios has offered to resign from his administrative positions at the EOK and withdraw from all basketball-related activities until the case reaches a final verdict. He is currently seeking release under restrictive conditions while the investigation proceeds.
