Weight-loss drugs drive growth in protein-enriched food market
The global food industry is experiencing a significant shift as the widespread use of weight-loss drugs, specifically GLP-1 agonists like Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro, drives a massive demand for protein-enriched products. The market for these items has reached a valuation of 58 billion dollars, as patients seek to offset the loss of muscle mass often associated with such medications.
According to an August study by the Boston Consulting Group, users of GLP-1 medications report that they intend to spend 11% more on high-protein foods compared to their pre-treatment habits. Manufacturers are responding by introducing protein-fortified options across various categories, including bottled water, ice cream, packaged cheese pasta, and even vodka.
However, consumer sentiment remains mixed. Interviews conducted by Reuters reveal that while buyers are seeking more protein, many are growing skeptical of marketing claims. Consumers have expressed concerns that some products may not contain the stated amount of protein and are frequently discouraged by excessive additives and high sugar content, which they believe negate the perceived health benefits of these foods.
